Last evening, one of my readers (Hi Kate!) emailed me asking questions about yesterday's hibiscus card. She wondered how well Stampin' Up! colors would work for the flower, as the majority of her ink colors are from Stampin' Up! Well, the first thing I can mention is that Stampin' Up! classic dye inks work wonderfully with Kitchen Sink Stamps! A lot of clear stamps don't work as well with dye inks... they tend to bead up. Not so with Kitchen Sink!
To help Kate, and anyone else who might need to be enabled, I've created a little color tutorial here with 4 different colored hibiscus' to show you how great the SU! colors will work here! (In the interest of trying not to have this post be too heavy with pictures, I'm keeping them kinda' small. You can always click on the picture for a bigger view!)
This first photo shows the first layer of the hibiscus flower stamped (starting in the upper left and going clockwise) with Apricot Appeal, So Saffron, Almost Amethyst, and Blush Blossom.
Again, starting in the upper left and working clockwise, the second layer of the hibiscus is stamped in Only Orange (stamped off once to reduce brightness), Summer Sun, Lavender Lace, and Pretty in Pink.
Here the third hibiscus layer is stamped in Pumpkin Pie, Marigold Morning, Lovely Lilac, and Regal Rose. (Funny... after I stamped the first one with Pumpkin Pie, I said "Well, hello gorgeous!" because it looked so pretty! My dog came running in at that point! Guess he thought I meant him!)
This fourth layer, which is actually the larger part of the stamen was stamped in Ruby Red, More Mustard, Elegant Eggplant, and Rose Red.
And finally, this fifth layer is the fine detail part of the stamen. On the upper left I stamped this in Close to Cocoa. On the yellow flower to the right, I actually used Old Olive. The purple flower I ended up just using black, because the Elegant Eggplant ended up being so dark itself. And the pink flower has Bravo Burgundy.
Here are close-ups of each finished flower.
For the leaf, I make a mask using post-it note paper. I stamped the first hibiscus layer on it and cut it out. I offset it slightly, otherwise I end up with white space between my flower and leaf. Here's the first leaf layer stamped in Certainly Celery.
The second leaf layer stamped in Old Olive.
And the third layer of the leaf, stamped in Always Artichoke.
And finally, the finished result! And now the really neat thing is that I have three more flowers already stamped to use for some quick cards!
Kate, since you asked about the colors prompting this tutorial, this card is yours! Please email me your address. And the first three people to leave a comment here, and then email me their addresses will get the other 3 cards that I'll make with the other flowers!
Don't forget, the hibiscus and 7 other new stamps sets are all available over at the Kitchen Sink Store!
Stay tuned... I've got my card to upload for todays Sketches! by Tamara challenge, too! It's a real hoot! You won't want to miss it!
Stamps: 3-Step Hibiscus (Kitchen Sink Stamps); Cardstock: Green Tea (Bazzill), white (Gary Burlin), designer paper (Paper Salon); Inks: see above; Accessories: ribbon (May Arts), paper piercing tool.
This is awesome, Tammy! They all look so beautiful!

Oh, I thought of a question, too: Even with the clear stamps, sometimes I don't line up the images quite exactly. Do you have a tip or technique you use to line them up correctly each time? Each one of these looks perfect! Thanks!

How beautiful! And thank you for the color combos. I have just been discussing with Maria this morning the possibility of collecting some color combinations for the different three-step stamp sets. I love them all and have played only with the rose set, though I have all the flowers. I do not have SU stamp pads, but I'm sure I can come close with those I do have. Thank you for sharing your wonderful tutorial and brilliant creations!
